SAN DIEGO (April 16, 2014) – San Diego's two postseason college football games combined to produce an economic impact of $30.7 million, up nearly $2 million from the previous year, for the San Diego region in 2013. This figure was the result of a study conducted by the San Diego State University Center for Hospitality and Tourism Research. The games were organized by the San Diego Bowl Game Association.

The 36th annual National University Holiday Bowl featured a Dec. 30 matchup between Texas Tech and Arizona State that generated $23.9 million in economic impact. The study revealed that 24,771 fans traveled from outside the County of San Diego to attend the game and an estimated 26,566 hotel room nights were sold. Total game attendance at Qualcomm Stadium was 52,930.

The 9th annual San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl was held Dec. 26 and played host to Northern Illinois and Utah State. Overall economic impact was $6.9 million. According to the study, 8,357 fans traveled from outside San Diego County to attend the game, and an estimated 8,495 hotel rooms were sold. Total attendance at the game was 23,408.

"Year after year, our two bowl games provide a tremendous boost to the San Diego region," said Bill Geppert, San Diego Bowl Games Association past president, "during the slowest time of the year for the tourism effort here. We are proud that our year-around efforts culminate in a positive outlook for our hometown."

The mission of the non-profit San Diego Bowl Game Association is to generate tourism, exposure, economic benefit and civic pride for San Diego and its citizens by presenting nation's most exciting and entertaining bowl games and festivals of events.

Since 1978, the two games have combined to generate an economic benefit of nearly $700 million for the San Diego region.
